At first I really wasn't sure I wanted to apply to a "big name" law firm, but within two days of starting my vacation placement at Lovells, I realised that a City law firm was exactly where I wanted to be working! On my vacation placement I started to appreciate the excitement of working in a firm which is a leader in its field and realised the opportunities that come from working for a truly international law firm with expertise in a huge variety of practice areas. The key factor though was the people I met, all of whom went out of their way to make me feel welcome. This is an aspect of Lovells which has continued to impress me right through the GDL, LPC and into my training contract, where I have had a great support network and never felt isolated.

I have just finished my first seat in Retail Banking where our clients include most of the well-known high street banks. I have looked at topics as diverse as data protection, mortgage servicing and even Islamic finance and with the vast amount of new European consumer legislation being introduced at the moment, there has never been a dull moment! I am moving to Construction and Engineering litigation next, about which I am really excited. The fact that we are able to plan our seats in advance is a great bonus and gives you flexibility and security that I know several of my friends at other firms would like.

The firm's Pro Bono work is another excellent feature which is well worth getting involved with as a trainee. So far I have observed at the Pensions Appeal Tribunal and helped out with cases for the Royal British Legion, as well as being involved in representing a victim of domestic violence in obtaining an injunction against her abusive partner.

My advice to people considering a career in Law would be to remember that all the big firms have excellent lawyers and blue chip companies as clients. The differential is the people and the best way to find your niche is through vacation placements and open days. I also strongly recommend deferring the start of your training contract to March - 6 months travelling in Asia and South America was a great way to relax after the LPC and to recharge my batteries before starting my contract.
