POST-QUALIFICATION
Training at Lovells doesn't end with qualification. We are committed to the continued professional development of our lawyers throughout their careers.
Post-Qualification
After qualification emphasis is placed on accruing business and managerial skills with training for particular Practice Streams, as well as on the continued advancement of legal skills within specific practice areas.
Post-Qualification Legal Training
Our legal education programmes focus on the law and legal developments within your particular stream within the firm, be that:
- Corporate
- Finance
- Dispute Resolution
- Commerce and Real Estate
Lovells also organises Foundation programmes for newly qualified lawyers to introduce them to the type of work encountered in their practice stream, providing the skills and knowledge to work effectively.
These foundation events often involve delegates from all our offices around the world convening for a three-to-five day training course. They provide a valuable opportunity to meet international colleagues and to participate in an intensive, practice specific training programme.
Following on from these foundation events, training is targeted to the specific practice area in which you work. These courses are designed to continually increase legal knowledge and skills in your chosen field.
Practice Stream Training Programmes
Each of the four practice streams has a distinct programme for lawyers which combines legal training and skills courses.
A key objective is to ensure that training does more than simply reflect the work of that Practice Stream; instead, as far as possible, all training will be set in the context of the type of work that the practice area does and will link with lawyers' practical experience.
Each Practice Stream Training Programme covers a wide range of legal and skills training which will be made available to all Lovells lawyers in that Practice Stream, worldwide; to facilitate attendance by lawyers outside London, some courses may be combined with international retreats. Additional programmes will of course continue to be offered in individual offices, according to jurisdiction.
Some examples of these courses are:
- Professional Essentials
- Anti-money laundering
- Essentials of law firm finance
- Ethics and professional conduct
- Commercial Skills
- Understanding corporate professional statements
- Effective written communication
- Drafting
- Successful negotiating
- Business Development
- Practical business development
- Developing and managing client relationships
- People Management
- Your role as a manager of people
- Becoming a leader
- Public Speaking, Personal Impact and Communication
- Developing personal impact
- Effective public speaking
Lovells Cass Business Programme for lawyers
Each Practice Stream Training Programme will also form the initial phase of a new training programme in commercial skills, the Lovells Cass Business Programme for Lawyers (BPL). We have developed this in partnership with Cass Business School in London, one of the top ten business schools worldwide. The programme offers Lovells lawyers comprehensive business training, with the opportunity to progress towards the completion of an MBA.
The BPL is believed to be the first training of its kind offered by an international law firm in alliance with a business school. It comprises three tiers of progressive training:
- Business Foundations: An intensive introductory programme of business training, covering the main business issues affecting law firm clients
- Business Masterclasses: Three electives of an MBA selected for their particular relevance to lawyers
- Cass Business School MBA: Opportunity to complete the full MBA
Parallel to these will be a series of 'industry briefings' for lawyers, topical seminars covering the current key issues for clients in a particular sector.
