VACATION PLACEMENT SCHEME

Individuals gravitating towards law have the opportunity, through our vacation placements, to gain exposure to life and work in a City law firm.

Approximately 50% of the 90 graduates who are typically offered a training contract by us will have participated in one of our vacation placements.

We offer up to 90 vacation places over four highly regarded schemes. You will gain a broad insight into the work of the firm, your time being split between two or three of our major sectors (corporate, finance, commerce and dispute resolution).

As part of our summer placements, we are offering an additional two weeks in our Paris, Frankfurt, New York or Chicago offices. If you are interested in applying, please forward a covering letter to recruit@lovells.com

We have structured the programmes to ensure you will:

  • get involved in real work with real clients in much the same way as our trainees: drafting, attending meetings, doing legal research and, where possible, attending court
  • find out about the firm's broad range of practice areas by attending lunchtime talks and workshops
  • learn how to run a meeting
  • attend a corporate workshop
  • undertake a presentation: working with other vacation students and receive training in presentation skills
  • attend an advocacy workshop
  • participate in a variety of social events, meeting trainee solicitors, lawyers and partners
  • be paid £300 per week

Japanese work experience programme

We are offering a bursary of £1,500 to a student making a successful application to the firm for a work experience placement in Tokyo and London. In order to become eligible for the bursary successful candidates will need to complete the vacation scheme application form. Please note that only candidates who are fluent Japanese speakers will be considered for the placement.

Once a successful application form has been submitted, candidates will have to sit an analytical thinking test and attend an interview with two of the firm's partners - part of the interview will be in Japanese. Successful candidates will then be offered the bursary which will be dependant on them spending one month in our Tokyo office and either two or three weeks in London.

The timing of the placements can be agreed with individual candidates to fit in with their studies and around the times of the London placement schemes. Accommodation costs would be provided for living in Tokyo at the rate of 300,000 yen for the month (about 1,500 GBP). The London placements are paid at the rate of £300 per week. These costs would be paid on top of the £1,500 bursary making the total value of the bursary around £4,000.
